TV Payments

The challenge: The challenge was challenge to address the cumbersome payment experiences on smart TVs and to build a solution that leverages the Internet of Things (IoT) concept. Recognizing the limitations of entering card details and usernames on a remote-controlled smart TV, the focus was on creating a better user flow.

The solution: To address this challenge, I designed a unique user flow that integrated IoT and the Apple TV platform. Collaborating with a development agency, we transformed my design into a working prototype within a few weeks. The solution was thoroughly tested, refined based on my feedback, and finally I then presented it through a demo.

The Apple TV in this setup automatically connected to a Raspberry Pi using a purchased domain name and a fixed IP address. The functionality involved the Apple TV detecting the user’s presence and displaying their favourite movie – using some smart AI, autonomously initiating the payment process, and playing back the content. It also incorporated intelligent features like identifying slow internet connections and seamlessly paying for higher bandwidth to ensure smooth 4K playback. When the video was paused or stopped, micropayments for premium internet usage would cease.

This compelling demo explored the possibilities of payments in the IoT landscape, introducing innovative ways to enhance the Apple TV and smart TV experiences. Moreover, it generated a plethora of ideas for future IoT demos and intellectual property development for Worldpay.

The “TV Payments” portfolio demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to revolutionizing payment experiences on smart TVs through IoT integration. By streamlining the process and leveraging automated payment capabilities, it enhances user convenience and opens up avenues for further innovation in the payments industry.
