Searching is a new movie from Hollywood, focused on a father’s search for his missing daughter.

I loved it, I thought it build a tremendous amount of tension, and the twists & turns and payback were worth it. The Evening Standard described the ending as ‘gormless’ – I completely disagree; I thought it had a fantastic ending. It’s kind of high concept in that the whole movie is shown via the screen on a laptop, and/or any footage that can be shown that way; FaceTime, iMessage, CCTV capture, quicktime/vimeo/youtube, and video streaming services. It later breaks away to show footage on other social media and news sites, and to show footage from live TV, and a few other sources….

… But the concept works, pretty spectacularly in my view; in terms of stunning visuals – but also telling the story and building the tension. It works, and they kept quite technically accurate – for a change there’s no ‘guessing-that-person’s-password’ after 3 attempts 😀

Gosh I loved it actually.

I worry that the very contemporary use of tech might be a bit gimmicky and feel dated quite quickly – but because of it’s accuracy; maybe it won’t, looking back on this in a few years it perhaps will give a sense of nostalgia in terms of how our online life looked. The fact it is time accurate as well in terms of tech used (e.g. growing up they use Windows XP, then later they’re using the latest Mac OS) – I love that, and seeing a beautiful high def rendering of Windows XP was was lovely and nostalgic!

I thought the acting was excellent through out – and the plot kept me guessing, I honestly didn’t know where this one was going to go, and I bought into every twist a long the way. It’s a tense, fast, and sometimes dark ride. I urge you to go and see it, and I’d love to know what you thought of it.
