My Macbook Pro is wonderful, it was an excellent purchase, and the upgrade procedure from a 12-inch G4 powerbook was simply impeccable.
I finally realised it was time to get a new laptop for myself. Yes my 12 inch G4 Powerbook is brilliant, but I'd run out of hard disk space, and run out of RAM for some newer programs and it was a choice; spend weeks trying to upgrade or go for a new one. So off I went to the apple store I considered a Mac book, they look okay but they're just not as stylish as my G4. The MacBook Air is cool, but just not practical enough and I don't like the keyboard. So it had to be a Macbook Pro - I love the aluminium look. But the smallest they do is 15 inch, well 17 inch was too big, and so it was time to upgrade to a larger laptop.
Really pleased I did it, I've been using it for a few weeks, and the extra couple of inches is actually really convenient. Its bigger, yes, but it weighs a lot less than my G4 so I am quite happy actually. Purchase choices were 2GB or 4GB, so the ram upgrade had to happen, I'm not running out of ram soon, ok! And glossy or matt screen. I love the look of the glossy screens, but matt has been working for me for 6 years, and I was a little concerned about dvd playback when the screen is that shiny. I think I made the right choice.
So the purchase process was pleasurable - producing student id got me a 420 quid discount, what with an 80% discount on Apple Care, I couldn't refuse.
So I got it home, the guy in the store mentioned once I'd set up a user account I could use the system tools to migrate my user account but probably not applications... What I didn't expect was that on turning on my new MacBook Pro, an hour and a half later I would have EVERYTHING transferred to my new computer, as if it was exactly the same machine. Firstly I turned it on, it said do I have a mac already?, I said yes... It then said would I like to transfer everything?, and I said yes... I had to connect the two laptops with a firewire cable and turn my 12 inch on in transfer mode, but an hour and a half later everything was transfered:
- The user accounts
- All my...
- ... photos
- ... itunes library - all of it
- ... my documents
- ... settings
- ... network settings
- ... web browsing bookmarks and settings
- ... applications - no need to register anything again.
That last one was the most impressive, all my applications came across and work, fantastic!! I wad expecting to be spending at least the next couple of weekends getting everything working again.
I don't think I could be more impressed with it really. Remember you need to authorise the new computer in iTunes, but thats easy enough. Its everything as it was but loads faster, and I've got huge amounts of space, so I could download all my holiday photos and videos and put my record collection on my computer. I discovered the Front Row app which is pretty cool, and iMovie now works, which is a brilliant little tool for putting simple videos together.
My next project is to get my windows formatted iPod classic working with my new Mac. I almost don't use my PC anymore, and with parallels waiting to be installed that PC is soon to be retired. Apple rules!!! [sorry :-)] Oh yes and I've got to find something to do with my 12 inch G4 now.
Overall I would rate the computer 10/10 it is a brilliant computer. I would rate the installation and setup process 10/10 - this is how it should be for all laptops. I wish PCs were this good, but who cares I've got an Apple!
