Business Speak [ 22nd May 2009, 23:49:01 ]
Oh isn't "Business speak" just wonderful, when I first started working in the corporate environment way back when I was young and naive and rather intimidated by some of the things managers say. I quickly came to realise most of it is complete rubbish; a selection of business speak and an outrageous reliance on acronyms. Here I'm dedicating a page to some of the terms I think are the funniest.
These one's I got from the BBC here
- Going forward
- Idea showers - instead of brainstorm
- Incentivise
- Let's touch base about that offline
- You can't turn a tanker around with a speedboat change
- We need a holistic, cradle to grave approach
- You don't have problems, you have challenges
- I've got you on my radar
- Quick win
- low hanging fruit
- Kick the tyres
- Look under the bonnet
- Pre-prepare
- Forward planning
- Pre-plan
- Think outside the box
- Conversate
- In this space
- How can I help in this space
- How can we help our customers in this space going forward
- From the get-go
- Go forward together
- 360-degree thinking
- We are still optimistic results will feed through the delivery pipeline
- We'd better not let the grass grow too long on this one
- Get all my ducks in a row
- My door is open on this issue
- Close of play
- Actioning
- And also in addition
- Where are we at
- At the end of the day
- 110%
- Not enough bandwidth
- Out of the loop
- You can't have your cake and eat it, so you have to step up to the plate and face the music
- The stakeholders must come to the party
- We must get stakeholder buy-in
- Paradigm shifts
- Feeding it back
- cascading
- cascading down
- granularity
- leverage
- leverage their talents
- Mitigating immediate impacts
- Strategic staircase
- Drill down
- Impactful article
- High altitude view
These are some my Dad came up with (please don't let them be one's he's really heard!)
- We've got to work out the ceiling before we determine the start
- Don't worry about the socks, lets look at the shoes
- Processing the ham to see what the beef was like
Here's a selection from wikipedia here
- Add -age to lots of words e.g. signage, breakage, etc
- Lets connect ear to ear
- Heads up
- Leverage, to leverage, leveraged
- Touch base
And a few more from BBC here.
- Blue sky thinking
- Pushing the envelope
- Give me a heads-up
- Lets dialogue around the issue
Another one is "going forward" loads of people use it, grammatically you should actually be saying "going forwards" but don't use either! Argh I say this!
